Lorena, 20s, seems to be the classic stereotypical cheerleader – beautiful, perky, with far more spirit than IQ points. But “seems” is the operative word. Lorena knows there is an intelligent, committed woman inside her. The world just refuses to notice.
Scene background: The remaining humans are trapped in the motel. The zombies are closing in, things are looking grim, and yet, some snooty girls still found time to insult Lorena – just because she’s a cheerleader.
LORENA
People don’t make fun of someone born without earlobes, or, I don’t know, a belly button that goes out instead of in. That’s considered cruel. And yet just because I was born like this...
(she gestures – game show style – to her face and body)
... they think it’s okay to make fun of me.
(reliving the painful moments)
“Oh, she’s just a stupid cheerleader.” “Cheerleaders are mean.” “Cheerleaders are stuck up.” Even TV and movies do it. Well, just try being a cheerleader. Everyone hates you.
(beat)
Except the guys. But they don’t like you. You’re like a...a...a car. All they can talk about are your parts. But instead of “killer rims,” or “bitchin hydraulics,” -- we get “bodacious headlights, baby,” “great poopshoot, poopsie.” Some guy actually said that to me! “Poopsie”? I mean, really?
(she sighs)
And now, when I finally meet some guys interested in me for my brains...all they want to do is eat them.
(beat)
But when the going gets tough, it takes spirit to get you through. And spirit will get us through this. People hate cheerleaders because we’re pretty and positive and we never give up on our team. But that’s what it’s going to take to get us out of this. So all those artsy fartsy, pseudo-intellectual bitches can choke on their decaf espressos. This cheerleader is going to save the freakin’ world.
(she picks up a shotgun)
So, when I say “Zombies,” you say “Blast ‘em!”
Zombies! Blast ‘em!
Zombies! Blast ‘em!
(she pumps the shotgun)
I'm ready.
